INGM 222 | Thermodynamics I is a comprehensive support course designed to help engineering students understand and apply the fundamental principles of thermodynamics.
Thermodynamics is not a subject that can be mastered by memorising a collection of formulas. Students need to understand the relationship between properties, correctly identify the system and process being analysed, determine the state of a substance, select suitable assumptions and construct the correct mass or energy balance.
The course follows the structure and outcomes of the INGM 222 study guide. It begins with units and thermodynamic properties before progressing to ideal gases, condensable substances and the use of steam tables. Students are then introduced to work, heat and energy conservation in closed systems, followed by enthalpy and energy conservation in steady-state and transient open systems.
The final sections introduce entropy, reversible systems, heat engines, real processes, entropy generation and the performance of turbines, compressors and pumps.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on a consistent engineering problem-solving method:
Draw the system → Record the given information → State the assumptions → Determine the substance and phase → Write the key equation → Find the required properties → Substitute with correct units → Evaluate whether the answer is physically reasonable.
Recorded explanations, worked examples, chapter questions, short quizzes and test and examination preparation are included to help students develop both understanding and problem-solving confidence.
